About the Alphabet leaderboard

Alphabet mode strips typing down to a single decision: a letter appears, you hit it. There is no word to read, no spelling to recall and no rhythm to settle into, so the scores on this board measure something quite different from a normal typing test — they measure how quickly you can recognise a symbol and fire the correct finger.

Because each completed letter counts as one word for scoring, the WPM figures here run far higher than they do in word-based modes. Do not compare an Alphabet score against a Medium Words score; compare it against other Alphabet runs. What it tells you is your raw keystroke ceiling, which is the upper bound every other mode is working toward.

Prefer to train rather than compete? The Alphabet practice page has the full guide to this drill, or browse all practice modes.

Alphabet leaderboard FAQs

Why are Alphabet WPM scores so much higher?

In letter-drill modes each completed entry counts as one word, rather than the standard five-characters-per-word formula. A single keystroke therefore scores what five would elsewhere, so Alphabet numbers are only meaningful against other Alphabet runs.

Does this measure reaction time or typing speed?

Mostly reaction time. With no word to read and no spelling to plan, the gap between the letter appearing and the key going down is close to your raw recognition-plus-motor latency — which is why it is the recommended drill for anyone learning key positions from scratch.
