Programming mode uses the vocabulary developers actually type — function, return, boolean, const, async — rather than ordinary English prose. It is the board that best reflects working conditions for anyone who spends the day in an editor, and the words behave differently from natural language: shorter, more repetitive, and far more likely to be typed in bursts.
It is also the mode where keyboard layout matters most. Symbol placement varies enormously between national layouts, and typists on layouts that displace brackets and semicolons genuinely have more work to do here than on a US board. If your score drops sharply in this mode but holds everywhere else, layout is the usual explanation.
Prefer to train rather than compete? The Programming practice page has the full guide to this drill, or browse all practice modes.
It uses programming vocabulary rather than full syntax, so it trains the words developers type most rather than bracket-matching. That keeps scores comparable with other word modes while still reflecting a developer's actual vocabulary.
Keyboard layout. Symbol and punctuation placement differs substantially between national layouts, so this is the mode where a non-US layout costs the most. The rankings do not adjust for it.
Every mode ranks separately — scores are only comparable within one.
