Mixed Case randomises capitalisation, which turns every word into a coordination problem: the shift key has to be held by the opposite hand at exactly the right moment, and released before it corrupts the next character. It is the mode that most reliably separates typists with real technique from typists with fast fingers.
The specific fault it exposes is single-handed shifting — using the same hand for shift and for the letter, which forces a stretch and breaks the anchor. Typists who alternate hands properly barely notice this mode; typists who do not see their accuracy fall off a cliff. If that is you, the fix is technique, not speed.
Prefer to train rather than compete? The Mixed Case practice page has the full guide to this drill, or browse all practice modes.
Almost always single-handed shifting. If you press shift with the same hand that types the letter, your hand has to stretch out of position and back, which costs both time and precision. Alternating hands eliminates it.
It can. UK ISO and Brazilian ABNT2 layouts add a key beside one of the shift keys, making it narrower — typists who pivot to reach it lose a little time on every capital.
Every mode ranks separately — scores are only comparable within one.
